What is it?

Youth Explorer provides visual insights and easy-to-access to data about young people's education, economic opportunities, family and living environment, and health.

Key Points

  • Youth-related data from Census 2011 and Community Survey 2016
  • Crime data from SAPS
  • Youth education and health data for Western Cape
  • Embed visualisations on your website

Why is it Important?

Little understanding exists about the realities faced by South African youth. This makes policies and interventions to address these issues and offer support to young people a challenge. Youth Explorer was developed to begin to fill these gaps in our understanding. Drawing on census data, it provides a range of information on young people aged 15-24, in one easily accessible place. You can quickly isolate and compare indicators on young people’s education, economic opportunities, family and living environment, health and more.

How can it be accessed and used?

Data can be viewed, downloaded and embedded from the Youth Explorer website by selecting a place of interest and scrolling down to the relevant topic, then clicking on "Chart Options" on the top right of the data graphic.

For example, you can see how many young people between the ages of 16 and 17 have completed grade 9, how many between the ages of 20 and 24 have completed matric, and the percentage of youth who are employed. You can also see data related to family and the living environment, poverty, identity, belonging and safety, and health and wellness

If you download the file, you will have a CSV or XLSX spreadsheet that you can analyse in various ways. If you wish to embed the data, you will be provided with an embed code that you can paste into your own CMS or HTML.
