What is it?

National Geo-spatial Information (NGI), a component of the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform (DRDLR), runs an integrated survey system and provides mapping and aerial imagery coverage of South Africa.

Key Points

  • Topographical and aeronautical maps
  • Colour digital aerial imagery
  • Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) reference base station data
  • South African Spatial Data Infrastructure (SASDI)

Why is it Important?

Through high resolution mapping and aerial imagery services, NGI gives decision-makers a complete spatial and visual picture of natural and man-made resources across South Africa. This information enables accurate planning and management of services and infrastructure.

How can it be accessed and used?

NGI provides a number of products or services via links on its website.

Maps and Geospatial Information
Such as 1:50 000 Topographical Maps, 1:10 000 Orthophoto Maps and 1:500 000 Aeronautical Edition Maps. The topographical maps indicate the location and elevaton of natural and man-made features, and datasets can be access via SASDI search as noted below, such as for the Northern Cape Province. The topographical vector data includes detailed spatial information on:

  • Land cover and land use
  • Educational infrastructure
  • Industrial infrastructure
  • Recreational infrastructure
  • Transport infrastructure
  • Utilities infrastructure
  • Hydrology including dams, lakes and rivers
  • Elevation contours and points
  • Physical natural and man-made land forms

Aerial Photography and Imagery
Including photography archives and current colour digital imagery at 0.25m GSD.

TrigNet network of GNSS base stations
Which act as reference GPS points for accurate positioning using low-cost devices. The TrigNet website points to an FTP server from which GNSS data feeds can be accessed.

South African Spatial Data Infrastructure (SASDI)
Is an electronic meta-data catalogue implemented within the South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON) system to capture spatial meta-data for South Africa. A variety of NGI topographical and aerial photography datasets can be accessed via the SASDI search.
