What is it?

The SASDI EMC aggregates spatial meta-data (and data) which is captured and published by data custodians from various South African departments and agencies.

Key Points

  • Meta-data (and data) for over 2000 spatial datasets
  • Administrative and census boundaries
  • NGI imagery and topographic maps
  • Climate, environmental, energy and transport datasets

Why is it Important?

SASDI increases the discoverability and accessibility of spatial data by providing a central access point for publishing and finding dataset information, using standard data descriptions.

How can it be accessed and used?

SASDI (meta)data is best accessed through the search page, and specifically the 'listing' tab where you can search and view lists of datasets relevant to a query. Highlights include:

Imagery and topographic maps from the Chief Directorate: National Geo-spatial Information (NGI) at DRDLR.

Administrative and census boundaries, including sub-place areas, from the Municipal Demarcation Board and Statistics South Africa.

Energy, road and rail infrastructure through the NGI topographic maps but also directly from Eskom, NERSA and provincial departments.

Environmental, climate, biodiversity and biomass datasets from the Department of Environmental Affairs, CSIR, SAEON and others.

*Water bodies and land features * (natural/ man-made) through NGO topographic maps but also directly from the Department of Water and Sanitation.
